Wood Construction Essentials - An Intro to Mass Timber Session

September 16, 2026 (2:00 PM - 3:00 PM) (NDT)

Description

This session offers an introduction to modern wood construction, designed to give a foundational understanding of timber project execution. The session provides a straightforward overview of wood's material benefits before introducing the core concepts behind mass timber systems. This overview focuses on the essentials: identifying basic mass timber types, highlighting key National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) provisions, and outlining high-level project and coordination considerations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Exploration of the fundamental physical characteristics of wood, highlighting how they make it a highly competitive choice for modern building projects.
  • Introduction to engineered wood systems by defining the primary mass timber types, outlining their structural advantages, and reviewing the baseline National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) provisions that allow for taller timber developments.
  • Understand unique logistical demands of timber projects, focusing on early design coordination, prefabrication scheduling, and essential site management practices.
